June 3, 2023 - Parent Meeting Notes from Walk-4-Their Future

Hello Team Leaders & Parents

Thank you for being a part of the TYM Family! And a special thank you to those leaders and parents that joined in our 2023 Walk-4-Their-Future Family Fest event! It was a beautiful day!

We are excited to have our leaders involved, not just to support the TYM children but because your kids are going to be changed just as much as these kids will at camp! We are grateful for those returning leaders– your commitment is a true display of the positive impact that goes both ways!

Here is a recap of some of the topics covered at the Walk!

  1. Fundraising: Camperships need to be covered by the end of June.

  • Asking all of our Camp Leaders to participate in our annual Walk-4-Their Future Fundraiser by launching a personal fundraising page.

  • Our goal is to raise $130,000 to fund camp for 150 children

  • Another goal of our P2P efforts is to raise awareness.

    • SO, your son/daughter simply launching a page and then sharing an email with 10 family and friends inviting them to learn about TYM and their community service immediately introduces the cause to new people we would likely never meet.

    • And after doing this for over ten years, some of those folks WILL respond with a gift of some amount. We totally trust the process.

    • It costs between $500-600 for each volunteer -- that includes training & materials, background check, and the fee we pay to Alliance Redwoods for our cabins & meals. That makes for an easy fundraising goal to shoot for to meet or exceed that cost. Some will raise less and some will raise more.

    • In the end, we appreciate the participation and effort, and we ALWAYS trust God for the provision."

  • Prep your teens for camp

    • Make sure they stay on top of emails and messages for updates

    • Make sure they attend trainings as they are important for making them strong leaders

      • Learn about the Roles & Goals of Team Leaders

      • Learn about Cultural Competency

      • Learn about being Self-Aware, Others-Aware, & God-Aware

    • Support them in sharing their fundraising pages with friends and family

  • Tech Policy (we'll be having a No-Phone Zone)

    • Why? A lot of our kids are without these devices, and this allows your kids to disengage with the outside world and connect with our campers fully

  • Logistics to and from camp

    •  Our Recommendation: Carpooling with Parent Drivers OR Parents pick them up and drop them off since they will be tired

  • Training Dates

    • Zoom Orientation - Make-Up Date: Wednesday, June 21st 6:00 pm- 7:30 pm

    • In-person All LeaderTraining: Sunday, June 25th 1:00pm - 5:00 pm (Oakland)

    • All Camp Leaders must complete training & background checks

  • Parent Pitch: Post Camp Leader Retreat

    • In years past (pre-COVID) we enjoyed hosting a Team Leader Reunion where we gather for a simple picnic-style meal or potluck where parents are invited to attend to hear stories of the camp week from their own teen as well as many others. Since many of our Team Leaders are SI students, we have aimed to host it at a home in The City or on the Peninsula.

    • Please let us know if you'd be open to considering that OR co-hosting with another family. It's a relatively simple gathering to plan, and the time is really powerful because, as mentioned, the camp experience is transformative for the kids AND the leaders.

May 15, 2023 - Request & Instructions - Setup Peer-2-Peer Fundraising Page

Greetings Team Leaders & Parents,

For many of you, the final weeks of the 22/23 school year are winding down. This means the summer months draw near with a different pace, including your TYM Camp team leader adventures. We are delighted to partner with you to serve over 150 underserved kids at camp this coming July.

Two brief assignments for the next 48 hours are:

  • Register your very own peer-to-peer fundraising page, and (5 mins)

  • Grab your free tickets for the Walk-4-Their Future and Family Fest on the afternoon of  Sat, June 3rd (2 mins)

We ask that each leader & household partner together to join us in our biggest fundraiser of the year: Walk-4-Their Future. This event was launched over ten years ago by a St Ignatius student who, after volunteering at camp, brainstormed with her family the type of event that people of all abilities could participate in AND would raise funds to ensure that kids from low-income families would be able to experience a high-quality summer camp.

Peer-2-Peer fundraising has been a fruitful way to raise funds AND introduce the cause and TYM to many new people we would not have met otherwise. Some of those people have become board members and major mission supporters. As a family, we ask that you launch a personal page, set a goal, and share your story of why you have chosen to serve urban kids at TYM Camp with ten other households in your circles of friends, family, and colleagues. That's it. We trust God for the result. You don't have to convince anyone of anything. Could you share your story and extend the invitation to join you in reaching your goal? We've made efforts to make the steps easy, and we've observed that some of your circle will respond and some won't -- but in all cases, the mission has been shared with hundreds of new people. We will help you launch your page and send you "mostly written" emails, texts, and social media posts to make inviting easy.

So, assignment #1 is to click the link below to fill out the short form, upload a photo of you (include your fam if you want), and your brief TYM Camp "why story." Next week we will send out the message templates and fundraise together to make it fun. To be clear, the key we are looking for is participation which equates to launching the page and sending out invitations to your circles to join you in your goal. The funds raised help cover the direct costs of staying at a full-service camp like Alliance Redwoods, as well as training and materials. (altogether approx $550). Funds raised above that amount help fund each of the 150 scholarships of $550 extended to 98% of the families attending camp. Please prayerfully consider setting a goal of $1,100. -- enough to fund your volunteer expenses AND send one child to camp.

Assignment #2 is even quicker and easier, securing your free tickets to attend Walk-4-Their Future Family Fest on Sat, June 3rd, in Richmond. This high-energy event includes fun and great food and is the beginning of your camp leadership journey, where you will meet fellow leaders, registered campers, and their parents/caregivers. Your parent(s) and family are also invited and encouraged to come and meet the TYM Camp staff team, camper kiddos, and your fellow leaders. You can select the number of free tickets for each person in your household planning to attend, add some contact information, and easy-peasy your done with two essential assignments.
