Backpacking (ages
13-18)
For our teens(ages 13-18), TYM offers 5-day
back packing trips in the High Sierras. Here teens will be exposed
to and experience God's creation like never before in their lives. Hiking
in pristine backcountry meadows, jumping into a cold mountain lake and
falling asleep under a blanket of bold shining stars is but the tip of the
iceberg.
The core of TYM’s backpacking program remains an extended wilderness
summer trip for battered and abused teens. TYM is similar to other outdoor
education programs, however TYM conducts its outings with a 2:1 ratio of
teens to adult volunteers, a unique format that transforms our program
into an intense and meaningful mentoring experience.
Although TYM uses an unconventional setting for its program, our goals
are similar to those of traditional youth development agencies. Specifically,
the TYM program positively impacts our teen's beliefs with regard to age/ethnic
diversity, self-esteem, environmental awareness, and interpersonal relationships.
As a result of the exposure and relationships formed with adult volunteer
role models, these teens become better equipped to make critical career,
educational and healthy lifestyle decisions.
